At Endress+Hauser, progress happens by working together. As the global leader in measurement instrumentation, our ~18,000 employees shape the future in the field of process automation. Whether developing and realizing new technology as a team, collaborating to build instrumentation, or strengthening vital relationships with countless global industries, we work to create trusted relationships that help everyone thrive. As a family-owned company, we look beyond short-term moves and work to create a vision that is forward-thinking for our people, our clients, and the world at large.
We are looking for an Optical Sensor Engineer to join our Anaheim R&D group and develop innovative optical sensors, components, and subassemblies that support reliable measurement solutions. In this role, you will combine optical design, testing, simulation, and cross-functional project leadership to bring new and improved sensor designs into series production.
What is the role about?
Are you motivated by designing and improving optical measurement systems? Do you enjoy selecting optical components, simulating designs, and validating performance through hands-on testing? Can you guide cross-functional teams as prototypes move into series production? This Anaheim-based R&D role brings those opportunities together as you partner with engineers, laboratory technicians, production employees, vendors, customer service, and international teams to advance optical sensor technology.
Which tasks will you perform?
You will:
- Design and redesign optical sensors, components, and subassemblies to meet customer needs while improving quality and reducing costs.
- Select optical components, including UV, UV/VIS, and NIR lamps and LEDs, optical filters, and windows.
- Define, perform, and document evaluation testing for parts, assemblies, and newly designed or redesigned sensors.
- Simulate and verify optical designs using software tools such as ZEMAX, and integrate designs into the technical framework of optical measurement systems.
- Manage R&D projects across cross-functional and international teams in accordance with Endress+Hauser procedures.
- Support the creation of mechanical drawings, bills of materials, routers, work instructions, and test equipment required to transfer prototypes into series production.
- Assess and improve photometers, evaluate engineering change requests, and conduct technology and patent assessments, including invention disclosures when appropriate.
- Mentor and train laboratory technicians and production employees on the correct assembly and testing of optical sensors.
- Support other departments, vendor and sub-supplier evaluations, product or technology transfer, field testing, and on-site problem solving, including occasional travel to Germany and customer locations.
What do we expect from you?
You:
- Hold a bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, or a related field; a master's degree or PhD is preferred.
- Bring five or more years of optical engineering design experience, including the application of photometry, spectrometry, and colorimetry standards.
- Possess deep knowledge of optics, optical components, optical measurement systems, manufacturing processes, and product applications.
- Are proficient with optical design software tools and able to perform optical engineering design tasks and manage projects.
- Understand electronic hardware, firmware, and software applications, along with product and part specifications and requirements.
- Apply sound research methods and can organize, prioritize, and assign work to meet deadlines.
- Collaborate effectively with engineers, vendors, management, and cross-functional stakeholders, and communicate clearly in English.
- Are proficient with personal computers, Microsoft Office, and SAP, and can occasionally lift and carry up to 35 lbs independently.
What can you expect from us?
- Family-owned, highly committed global company with a sustainable vision of the future.
- Lifelong learning encouraged by versatile training, tuition reimbursement, success coaching, and further education opportunities.
- Comprehensive benefit package (to include medical, dental, vision) and 401(k) savings with company match.
- Compensation is competitive and includes bonus opportunities.
- Work-life balance encouraged through our 10 company-paid holidays, paid time off, paid parental leave, employee assistance programs (financial, mental, and physical health and wellbeing), and employee discounts.
- Employees work in a safety-first, climate controlled, clean manufacturing facility with utilization of Lean practices and ergonomic workstations to enhance productivity and comfort.
